I Am The Inventor Of A Special New Robot - 1124 Words

I am the inventor of a special new robot. My robot is able to survive and learn on its own, even when I am not there to help it. In fact, it responds to my questions just like a person and even says that it loves me and misses me when I am gone. The government has passed a law that outlaws robots like mine. They claim that such robots have no minds – they are just machines and they will all be destroyed. I disagree with this statement because of two reasons: The function of machines, and the functions of minds. Argument 1 Machines are â€Å"an apparatus using or applying mechanical power and having several parts, each with a definite function and together performing a particular task†. He continues on by saying that â€Å"If logic can be used to command, and these commands can be coded into logic, then these commands can be coded in terms of 1s and 0s, therefore giving modern computers logic. Through this, how i s one to tell if robots don’t have minds if they use logic just like humans do. When the purpose of humans and machines are the same, they may process differently in order to complete that purpose, although they may have the same output. Because humans and machines receive the same input and return the same output, they both have minds in addition to functions and processes in order to do that. Human development is a process that is unique to each individual, with many internal and external factors responsible for shaping the characteristics of the individual. In this essay, we shall explore my own development from the perinatal stage through to young adulthood. I am going to discuss the accuracy of the statistics used to measure crime using examples. Is the world a more dangerous place now than fifty years ago? Do we all have the same views on what is a crime? Who are ‘criminals’? I am going to look in detail at exactly how crimes are recorded in England and Wales, what process a crime has to go through before it is recorded, and what happens to all those crimes that go unrecorded. I accept that this is a diverse and controversial area, and for the purpose of this essay I am going to concentrate on attempting to discover just what the relationship is between the real crime statistics and the Dark Figure of crime. You can also enjoy the sweet coconut smell of tanning lotion that my sister and I would put on when basking in the sun. Sometimes the lake would be quiet and relaxing, which can help you clear your head and forget about everything. Other times the lake would be filled with loud motors of boats and kids laughing as they played in the water. There are always fun activities to do at the lake, for instance if you liked touching the slimy scales of fish and the touch of cool water, you could go fishing. I like going for a fast boat ride or tubing, I love the rush I get rom it! If you like the calmer side of things, however you might enjoy kayaking or paddle boating better. When I want to enjoy the beautiful scenery of the lake I like to go kayaking, it really helps to clear my head. My favorite part about camping at the lake is watching the beautiful calming sunset and laying in the sand after the sun has gone down to stare up at the amazing, twinkling stars. The idea of understanding and diversity was just the beginning of what I learned in room 308. As time passed I realized Mrs. Stuisuck was not just there to teach us. She was there to learn and understand what people are dealing with. She referred to herself as a â€Å"forever student† and encouraged us to be the same. The ability to learn goes beyond the textbooks and homework assignments; the most learning comes from the people you interact with and the lessons they teach you. I adapted to the concept of the â€Å"forever student† and started to see the world on a deeper level. As applications began to become available, Mrs. Stuisuck encouraged me to go for the schools of my dreams. She reinforced the idea that the easy route would not satisfy me and success was with hard work and a rejection or two. I knew no matter how bad things looked I had to push through and never give up. Her constant support and faith in my abilities drove me to setting goals like keeping a 100 average in physics and applying to schools that would require more work then the local community co llege or SUNY state school. It is because of her I am writing this essay and it is because of my ability to excel, with the confidence she helped develop, that I know I can be successful with my post-secondary education. â€Å"Like a seed dropped by a bird in the wood† the outlooks on life Mrs. Stuisuck had planted in my head will grow with me. As I branch out to the people I encounter I will use the idea of the â€Å"forever student† and learn from what they have to say. Due to Mrs. Stuisuck I have been changed for good. I am truly thankful to have had her as a mentor and I hope I can reinforce the ideals she placed in me in the lives of those who I meet.

While writing about yourself sounds easy, many students find the statement of purpose one of the more difficult parts of the application process. Below are some guidelines and tips to help you write an effective statement of purpose. Format Typically, a statement of purpose is two to three pages, typed and double spaced. However, there are variations on this format. For instance, some programs request that you respond to a series of specific questions or they may give you a word limit for each question. Unless otherwise indicated, the central theme of your statement should be the reasons that you are interested in becoming a teacher and the reasons that you are interested in attending a specific institution. The statement should be well organized, concise, and completely free of grammar, punctuation and spelling errors. Try to be original and interesting without sounding trite. To write the best statement possible, you will want to start early, write several drafts, and let other people read and comment on it. Before You Begin a Draft, Keep the Following in Mind Remember Your Audience Admission committee members usually consist of university faculty and public school teachers or administrators. You need to understand and be able to correctly use â€Å"education lingo. † Do not â€Å"talk down† to your readers. Stick to what you are an expert in—your life and experiences. Establish Your Voice Choose a voice/tone that is confident without sounding arrogant. Avoid a tone that sounds sweet, innocent, or naive. Usually a straightforward tone will serve you best. If you need to explain poor grades, do so without making excuses. State what affected your performance and follow-up with what you did to improve the situation. Your essay should reflect what is special, unique, distinctive, or impressive about you. Answer the Question Many teaching credential programs do not give you much instruction on how to approach the statement of purpose. In that case, use the suggestions outlined below. However, if an application specifically provides a prompt or asks you a series of questions, then answer each question individually. Look At the Big Picture Does your essay reflect the type of person that educators feel they want teaching children? Have you had enough experience working with children or youth to convince admission committee members that you really want to be a teacher? Be Specific Try to use specific examples in your essay rather than abstract ideas. In other words, â€Å"show don’t tell. † For example, provide details of how you effectively dealt with a challenging student, or how you plan to create community in the classroom, or how you respect students, instead of just generically reporting that these things are important to you. Use the Following Topics To Assist You In Writing an Effective Statement of Purpose How did you become interested in this field? It is important to establish that you have had a long-term interest in becoming a teacher and that you have taken positive steps in pursuing this interest. Teaching credential programs guard against admitting â€Å"desperate graduates† who are grabbing at a profession that they can â€Å"fall back on. † One does not â€Å"fall back on† becoming a teacher. It is a profession that must be carefully planned and prepared for in advance. You may choose to open your essay with an example of how a teacher first influenced you, or describe how your parents or other family members are teachers, or you may draw from other educational, occupational, or personal experiences. What kind of activities or experiences have contributed toward your preparation for and understanding of this field? This section will probably be the longest portion of your essay. Discuss your internships, volunteer experiences, tutoring, camp counseling, swim instructing or other experiences you have had working with children or youth. Try to demonstrate that you have worked in a range of circumstances: various age groups, public school setting, one-on-one, group interactions, children with disabilities, multicultural settings, or varied subject matter. However, don’t just list what you did â€Å"resume style. † Instead, outline what you did as well as what you have learned about teaching (and yourself) that has stimulated your interest in the profession. What will be your contribution to the field of education? Be sure and identify whether you are pursuing a multiple subject or single subject credential (identify if it’s English, math, science, etc. ). Include what you have to offer the teaching profession (personal attributes) as well as what you hope to achieve at a broader level. For instance, you may want to discuss how you hope to impact children, or give back to your community in a specific way, or focus energy on a certain population of children (bilingual, special education, gifted, etc. ). What attracts you most about the institution you are applying to and why are you a match for their program? (Matching statement). You should have solid reasons for why you are applying to an institution. Examples might include that the teaching credential program is small or large, located in a diverse community, has an emphasis on multicultural issues, has opportunities for both research and applied experiences, a specific faculty member is involved with the program, etc. Do not simply state the university has a â€Å"good reputation. † Be specific as to why you would like to attend their program. The better the â€Å"match† with the program, the better the chance that you will be admitted. Additionally, you can expect to expand on this section in your interview. See our handout on â€Å"Preparing for the Teaching Credential Interview. Remember, there is no one correct way to write a statement of purpose. Each person’s background and experiences will shape a unique statement. Critiques of your statement are offered by Pre-Teaching Credential Advisors. You will need to submit a typed draft to Advising Services, 111 South Hall, and retrieve it after two full business days.
