Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, or as many know by the abbreviation PTSD, is a complex mental issue that affects several every day. People that know of post-traumatic stress disorder tend to connect it to military personnel. In recent years, PTSD has been diagnosed in people who have endured other types of high-stress experiences as well (Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)). In 1980, the American Psychiatric Association (APA) added PTSD to the third edition of its Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-III). Although PTSD was recognized as a mental disorder in 1980, in the 1800’s doctors began to notice that soldiers were â€Å"exhausted† from war and would experience mental shutdowns and similar symptoms of†¦show more content†¦Within the military, the percentages are higher depending on the era the personnel served. Vietnam Veterans have the highest population percentage with every 15 out of 100 service members are currently diagnosed with PTSD. The change is each era’s statistics show correlation to how deadly the war was by the amount of casualties, with the Vietnam War having the most casualties. The cause of Post-traumatic stress disorder is not solely due to experiencing combat situations. 23 out of 100 women (23%) reported sexual assault when in the military. 55 out of 100 women (55%) and 38 out of 100 men (38%) have experienced sexual harassment when in the military (How Common Is PTSD?). Including the pervious causes, Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder can be caused by childhood neglect, childhood physical abuse, physical attack, and being threatened with a weapon. With a large population diagnosed with Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, there are several symptoms and signs that those affected will show. Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder is categorized as a psychiatric, it is marked by biological changes and psychological symptoms. A person is not diagnosed with the disorder until the symptoms last for at least one month and/or interferes with daily lifestyle.
